Abstract CN54

Background

The more complex business environment and competition in all of the global aspects in the Italian healthcare system have allowed organizations to introduce structural and managerial innovative approaches to ameliorate flexibility, efficiency and quality in all the health related provided processes. An innovative approach among nurses seems to be the leadership practice, especially the empowering leadership which better emphasizes the single nurse in the nursing care delivery. The present study aims to assess how Italian oncology nurses perceive the empowering leadership approach in the nursing oncology field according to their years of work experience.

Methods

The Italian version of the “Empowering Leadership Questionnaire” (ELQ) was administered on-line and assessed according to years of work experience in oncology field. The questionnaire included sub dimensions: “Leading By Example”, “Participative Decision-Making”, “Coaching”, “Informing”, “Showing Concern-Interacting with the Team”. Years of work experience in oncology setting were divided into: until 1 year, 2-5 years, 6-10 years, 11-15 years, 16-20 years, 21-25 years, 26-30 years and over 31 years.

Results

Means and standard deviations showed high levels in all the sub dimensions’ perceptions in oncology nursing leadership dimensions. Additionally, none significant differences were recorded in all the ELQ sub dimensions and years of work experience in oncology field.

Conclusions

Leadership in oncology nurses is considered as more important all the dimensions investigated also in all ages of oncology nurses.
