CN51 - Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the nurse spiritual therapeutic scale for oncology patients and caregivers

Background

The need for valid and reliable instruments to assess spiritual care in oncology settings has become increasingly important due to the growing awareness of the holistic needs of patients and caregivers. This study is methodologically designed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Nurse Spiritual Therapeutic Scale for oncology patients and caregivers.

Methods

This methodological study was conducted between July 2022 and May 2023 with 200 oncology patients and their caregivers. Data were collected using the Information Form and the Nurse Spiritual Therapeutic Scale. In the data analysis, the number and percentage were used for categorical data, while arithmetic mean ± standard deviation was used for quantitative data. Content validity index was used for the compatibility analysis of expert opinions, Pearson correlation analysis was used for item-total score analysis of the scale and its sub-dimensions, and exploratory and confirmatory factor studies were conducted to determine the factor structure of the scale.

Results

The mean age of the nurses was 58.51 + 14.55, and 56.5% were female. In the compatibility analysis among expert opinions, the item-based content validity index was found to be between 0.88 and 0.99, while the scale-based content validity index was 0.97. The total Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.879. The factor analysis used to test the construct validity of the scale revealed that the scale had a single-factor structure with 20 items. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient of the scale was determined to be 0.847, and the result of the Barlett test was 3797.794 (p <0.000). As a result of the exploratory factor analysis in the study, it was found that the factor loadings obtained ranged between 0.29 and 0.89. The scale item-total score correlations were determined to be between 0.236 and 0.761. GFI, AGFI, and CFI were found > 0.90.

Conclusions

The Nurse Spiritual Therapeutic Scale for Oncology Patients and Caregivers is valid and reliable. It should be used to assess the expectations of oncology patients and caregivers regarding spiritual care from nurses.
