Abstract CN48
Background
Social support plays a critical role in improving treatment outcomes for cancer patients. Patients with strong social support systems tend to have better adherence to treatment plans and better physical recovery. An innovative cooperation between the non-profit organization Cancer Guidance Center (Kapa 3) and the “Care in Adult Cancer Patients” Nursing research laboratory support cancer patients and inform them of any procedure required to fully exercise their rights. Kapa3 manages the rights and obligations of people with cancer. The organization partners with public and private entities, such as the European Cancer Patient Coalition, in taking action to tackle cancer effectively, highlighting the issues facing Greek cancer patients and survivors. A nurse and a social worker informed patients about this innovative cooperation and how to communicate with welfare services. Many nursing students participated in the project as volunteers. They used digital applications that assist in completing information and supporting cancer patients. These will include all offered welfare services, together with all the required supporting documents for their applications. This study aims to assess how many cancer patients use this service.
Methods
This study was conducted in the oncology departments of selected hospitals in Greece. This research used convenience sampling with 348 cancer patients.
Results
The majority of the patients lived in Northern Greece (Thessaloniki), were female (216, 62.1%), and were married (271, 77.9%). The participants’ mean age was 60 ± 14 years. Most had breast cancer (28.4%) and lung cancer (22.4%). The majority of the selected cancer patients (71.3%) communicated with K3 to apply for the welfare service by the Disability Certification Centre, 42.5% for social invoice. About 33.6% (n = 117) of the caregivers communicated with K3. Most of them used mobile phone calls (129, 37.1%) and mobile applications (106, 30.5%).
Conclusions
Using the proposed innovative application will help cancer patients and caregivers develop a better relationship and improve their quality of life.
