Abstract CN11

Background

Patients with prostate cancer may experience a worsening in their emotional wellbeing and physical health due to treatments or disease burden. It has been reported that physical activity and lifestyle interventions are associated with improved patient outcomes and a lack of health literacy is perceived by patients as a key burden of their cancer experience, and an improvement in this aspect has been strongly correlated with better overall survival. Voice assistants have emerged as a promising tool to support patients' guided learning and exercises. Here, we report on the development, content, and functionality of the first Amazon Alexa voice assistant for patients living with prostate cancer in Spain.

Methods

A multidisciplinary group of expert physicians on prostate cancer were selected as a scientific committee. Based on their clinical experience and the scientific evidence, the working group agreed on and created the content. The topics for each module were defined through the use of a consensus technique. The digital skill, named ProstaGYM, was endorsed by the national patient association ANCAP and the design and programming was performed by an Amazon developer with support from Bayer Hispania.

Results

The skill contains four content modules: 1) general disease information and healthy lifestyle recommendations, 2) exercise routines to prevent sarcopenia, 3) specific exercises and interventions to manage urinary symptoms, 4) advice on sexual health and psychological support. ProstaGYM is available free of charge on the Spain Amazon Alexa skill store. Since its launch in November 2022, the following information on metrics were obtained (cut-off 30th April 2023): 144 unique customers, 164 user enablements (skill activation) and 182 sessions.

Conclusions

The skill ProstaGYM constitutes an innovative approach to guide patients with prostate cancer to self-manage disease symptoms and treatment side effects and promote physical exercise that may improve their quality of life.
