Abstract 1291P

Background

Oral mucosal pain is the most common and severe side effect of anti tumour therapy. Different treatment and protective approaches for ATT induced oral mucosal pain have been practiced and have varieties of success. Of which, radio protective agents, synthetic or natural, have been of great interest for researchers. This study aims to evaluate the effect of trio mouth wash as a herbal product on oral mucosal pain in palliative care patients.

Methods

This double blind placebo controlled study enrolled total thirty eight patients, admitted or visited at our center for palliative treatment.(19 control and 18 case groups) The patients were given this mouth wash gargle with 15 ml of oral rinse for a minute use for 4 times in a day for 15 days. Patients were evaluated weekly for oral mucosal pain by WHO graded oral toxicity scale.

Results

There was no grade-3 mucosal pain observed in patients who used ora t mouth wash and the grade of the mucosal pain was significantly different between the two groups with visible effects found in case group compared to controls. No significant difference between the case and control groups was observed when comparing the timing of appearing the first signs of mucosal pain. Oral lesions in case group were significantly lower than that of control group.

Conclusions

This study showed that the trio mouth wash containing Honey, Turmeric, Triphala can effectively reduce the oral symptoms of mucosal pain in patients undergoing palliative treatment. This herbal drug improves the grade of mucosal pain and reduces the size of oral lesions resulting from anti tumour treatment in palliative care patients.
