Abstract CN35
Background
The European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) Young Cancer Nurses’ (YCN) study highlighted diverse needs for training and education to support career development among YCNs. The accessibility of personal development opportunities of this nature is variable in European countries. The EONS Nightingale Challenge was developed to respond to YCNs’ needs for career planning and leadership development. This presentation aims to present the evaluation of the inaugural EONS Nightingale Challenge.
Methods
The EONS Nightingale Challenge was a community initiative; developed and delivered by a collaborative group of YCNs and experienced cancer nursing leaders. Participants took part in seven 1-hour webinars in English. Topics included compassion fatigue, burnout; leadership in cancer nursing; developing and leading a YCNs’ network; and career development in advanced practice, research, education and clinical-academic careers. Participants provided anonymous feedback on their experiences of the EONS Nightingale Challenge.
Results
151 participants from 29 countries participated in one or more of the EONS Nightingale Challenge webinars in Autumn 2020. 51 participants reported their experiences of the programme. Most participants strongly agreed the webinars met their expectations for learning (77%), and learning was relevant to their work (65%). All but two participants indicated that they intended to apply their learning from the Nightingale Challenge to support their personal development plan (59%). Difficulties identified included the speed (8%) and length (9%) of presentations. Suggestions for future development of the EONS Nightingale Challenge included increased opportunities for online networking, project management skills development, additional time for presentation and discussion for each webinar.
Conclusions
Online learning offers important opportunities to enhance access to personal and professional development opportunities for cancer nurses. However, language and time remain important challenges to the accessibility and impact of such programmes. Future programmes may consider the use of subtitled and/or multilingual presentations to support accessibility and inclusion.
