Abstract CN39

Background

Nurses have a key role in providing the best possible quality of health care. Cancer nurses are leaders for a reformed and better integrated, patient-centered holisitic approach in the health care system. They have different roles in cancer care and need to be academically prepared to positively impact the outcomes of healthcare, undergoing specialised trainings and educations. The aim of this study was to examine the opinions of young cancer nurses in Croatia for the need of educating leaders in cancer nursing and to determine the existence of differences in opinions between young cancer nurses and cancer nurses aged more than 35years old.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted via online research-designed survey that participants have taken after online educational course intended specially for Croatian young cancer nurses. Survey contained 33 questions; 8 sociodemographic questions, 12 questions abouth opinion in specialised and just undergone education and 6 leadership questions. Institutional etichs board approval was obtained. Electronic invitation was sent to all participants, including the link to acess the survey and electronic consent to participate in this study.

Results

There were total of 100 respondents, 34 respondents under 35 years old. 89.9% respondents were woman. 33% of respondents has MSc and 26% of the respondents has BSc. The research was conducted during February and March 2021. All respondents believe that there is a need for specialised education in cancer nursing and that leadership directly impacts the possibility and motivation for further education and quality of cancer care. Only 23% of respondents rated their work environment and current leaders positive. 79,6% of respondents have evaluated the conducted education with the highest grade. All the participants are interested in further form of this education.

Conclusions

Proffesional and academic standards in nursing emphasize the need for educating leaders in cancer nursing. Study findings are of great importance for developing further education for young cancer nursing leaders in Croatia and further. Cancer nurses in Croatia want to engage in their personal and proffesional growth by developing leadership competencis, continuing their education and seeking opportunitties for developing skills needed.
