Abstract 732P

Background

Highest cancer incidence rate was found in Northeast part of India. Among female’s breast followed by cervix and ovary are being most common cancers in Northeast region.

Methods

A total of 3,220 female beneficiaries between 30 to 70 years of age were screened for Breast Cancer using Clinical Breast Examination and Mammography from 28th April 2024 to 13th June 2024 in 8 districts of Assam. A total of 1,120 female beneficiaries aged between 18 to 70 years were screened for cervical cancer using Visual Inspection with Acetic acid and Pap smear from July 2022 to Feb 2024 at a tertiary hospital in Barpeta district of Assam.

Results

Out of these 3,220 females, 339 underwent mammography. The results showed BIRADS score 0 for 11 cases, BIRADS score 1 for 291 cases, BIRADS Score 2 for 20 cases, BIRADS Score 3 for 7 cases, BIRADS Score 4 for 7 cases and BIRADS Score 5 for 3 cases. Out of those 1120 females, 152 underwent Pap smear test. The results showed 83 cases with no abnormality, 47 cases with inflammatory smears, 14 cases with bacterial vaginosis, 4 were diagnosed with ASCUS and 2 were positive for HSIL. 2 of the samples were found to be unsatisfactory for evaluation due to scanty cellularity. Conclusions

Early detection of breast cancer with screening mammography means that treatment can be started earlier in the course of the disease, possibly before it has spread. This study also indicates the importance of Pap smear in the early diagnosis of cervical cancer and its pre-cancerous conditions. Pap smear when combined with HPV-DNA testing increases the scope of early detection. An awareness and sensitization campaign should be done in the community regarding the risk factors and signs and symptoms of breast and cervical cancer, the importance of breast and cervical cancer screening and the vaccinations available for cervical cancer. This will definitely reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with these diseases.
