The ESMO Publishing Working Group and the Translational Research and Precision Medicine Working Group decided to update the ESMO Handbook of Translational Research, which was first published in 2007. This update was needed due to important advances in cancer treatments in recent years, mostly based on new discoveries on molecular mechanisms, biological processes of human tumours, and emerging technologies. In addition, the continuous integration between preclinical and clinical research, and the recognition of the role of translational medicine, has promoted the development of precision medicine as a truly cross-disciplinary collaboration among cancer scientists and clinicians.
Organisations like ESMO play an important education role for medical professionals, and this Handbook is a significant addition to the society’s translational research portfolio. This Handbook is directed to a general oncology audience as well as to those starting out in clinical research.
The editors have updated the structure of the Handbook’s first edition, based on the original hallmarks of cancer, and have included topics including the emerging processes of evading tumour destruction and tumour inflammation, new challenges posed by tumour heterogeneity, and new study designs and technologies.
The ESMO Handbook of Translational Research is foreseen to be used in conjunction with the updated version of the ESMO Glossary in Molecular Biology of Cancer and Molecular Techniques, another invaluable resource produced by ESMO’s Translational Research and Personalised Medicine Working Group that seeks to explain the terminology of translational research in simple, concise terms for physicians and other professionals working in cancer care.
