Systematic inflammation responses have been proved as the metastatic and proactivity tumor factors through apoptosis inhibition, angiogenesis promotion and DNA decays. Eosinophil lymphocyte ratio (ELR) is a factor used as indicators of inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between ELR and subtype of patients with breast cancer in Sanglah Hospital, Bali.


An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from medical records among 105 breast cancer patients during the 2013-2015 period. Consecutive sampling technique was used in this study by considering exclusion and inclusion criteria. A subtype of breast cancers was divided into luminal (A and B) and non-luminal (Her-2 and TNBC). Data were analyzed using SPSS ver. 16 in mean±SD, percentage, and odds ratio (OR).


The average age of subjects was 50.44±1.06 years-old and about 34.3% were stage IIIB. The ELR cut-off point used in this study was 0.05 (AUC: 0.388) which differentiated between High and Low ELR. The subtype percentage of breast cancer in Luminal A, Luminal B, Her-2, and TNBC (triple negative breast cancer) were 10%, 48.3%, 25%, and 16.7% respectively. Luminal type of the breast cancer patients was found 58.3% in group ELR ≥ 0.05, whereas non-luminal type was found 41,7% (OR: 3.375; CI95%: 1.348-8.448; P = 0.008). In addition, there was no significant relationship between clinical stadium, Ki-67, histopathological grading, and TNM with ELR in breast cancer (P < 0.05).


There was a significant relationship between ELR and subtype of breast cancer patient at Sanglah Hospital, Bali, Denpasar, Indonesia. However, further study needs to be conducted to any variables that did not show a significant relationship. In addition, further studies with bigger sample size are necessary to learn the cause behind the peculiar results.
