Background
Urban and rural communities differ in many aspects including cancer risk factors and medical care; rural communities may have less access to health services which may lead to late diagnosis, suboptimal treatment and poor adherence to treatment and follow up, we aimed to compare the characteristics and outcome of Urban and rural women with breast cancer.
Methods
This retrospective study was conducted in Department of Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine Menoufia University, where the data of all women diagnosed with breast cancer between January 2012 and December 2014 were collected, tabulated and analyzed including; residence, Clinico-pathological characteristics, patients outcome and survival.
Results
This study included 892 women with breast cancer, 441 of urban residence (49.4%) and 451 of rural residence (50.6%), the mean age is 52.30±10.99 and 51.31±41.50 in urban, rural women respectively, the difference wasn’t significant but the difference in age group was significant with more extreme age groups in rural patients 65 years old (p = 0.04), presence of health insurance was more in urban patients (p
Conclusions
Rural and urban patients are not different in basic disease charachteristics, however rural breast cancer women tend to have more advanced stage, more recurrence and shorter survival than women of urban residence.
