This study aims to find the relationship between pictogram as a symbol for body mass and different types of gastric cancer.
100 patients with biopsy-proven gastric cancer by endoscopy and 100 healthy people at the beginning of this study were assessed for BMI and pictogram for the age 15 and 30 years. Blood samples of the 100 patients were obtained to evaluate serum lipid levels before starting the treatment. Then, for reassessment of serum lipids, 67 patients were sampled after the treatment period and the results were analyzed using SPSS.
In this study the relationship between risk of gastric cancer in the cardia and non-cardia cases with pictogram at ages 15 and 30 years were not seen. The mean TG level before the treatment was 114 Â± 24.7 and after the treatment it was 131 Â± 43.9 (P < 0.001), and the mean TC before the treatment was 161 Â± 33.9 and after the treatment it was 171 Â± 44.71 (P < 0.048). However, both cases indicated a significant increase following the treatment. Mean TG in metastatic patients was 124 Â± 33.8 and in patients without metastasis it was 108 Â± 22.8 (P < 0.009). 62.1% (52 patients) with gastric cancer showed low HDL serum levels. After the treatment, a significant increase in HDL level was observed in 44 patients (P < 0.02).
Our study did not show a clear and positive association between pictogram at ages of 15 and 30 years old and increased risk of gastric cancer. But it was found that most patients with gastric cancer had low levels of TG, TC and HDL at their referral time. Meanwhile, the increase in HDL level after the treatment may account for gastric cancer as a factor in decreasing HDL level.
