Lo strato basale è lo strato più profondo dell’epidermide ed è costituito da un monostrato di cellule basali o germinative (per lo più cheratinociti epidermici) che proliferano e si moltiplicano, dando origine a nuove cellule destinate agli altri strati epidermici. Migrando verso gli strati superiori dell’epidermide le cellule maturano e infine si trasformano in cellule cheratinizzate. Lo strato di cellule spinose appoggia direttamente sullo strato basale ed è composto da 5-10 strati di cellule.
