Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men and the second in women worldwide. Studies from different parts of the world have consistently reported a more advanced stage at presentation of colorectal cancer in the younger age groups; however, data on the prognosis of those diagnosed with colorectal cancer at a young age is debatable. The aim of this study was to determine tumor characteristics, response to treatment, and prognosis of patients diagnosed with rectal cancer below age 40 compared to those above age 40, presenting to our institution.
