Abstract

Aberrant methylation of CpG-islands of the promoter regions is a frequent epigenetic event in sporadic tumors of the colon and rectum (CRC), which provides a mechanism of genetic inactivation of onco-suppressors genes. Transcriptional activity of APC, CDH13, MLH1, MGMT, P16 and RASSF1A genes involved in carcinogenesis may be suppressed in human tumors by methylation of their regulatory sites as well.
