Abstract
Aim/Background
Survey EGFR mutation rate in all type specimens of histology and cytology at Pathology Department, Pham Ngoc Thach Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Diagnostic capabilities of each type of specimen should be evaluated and learn to have orientation for sampling.
Methods
Retrospective, statistical descriptive research with case series.
Results
Total cases in research: 855 cases, with percentage detect EGFR mutations in common: 358 cases / 855 cases = 41.87%. Grouping of type specimens: - Bronchial Specimens: Bronchial Biopsy, Transbronchial Biopsy, Transbronchial Needle Biopsy. - Lung Biopsy with CT-Scan Guiding. - Lung Surgery: Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATs), Open Lung Surgery. - Pleural Biopsy: Needle Pleural Biopsy (With Abrams Needle, Castelain Needle), Pleuroscopy. - Biopsy of Metastatic Lesions: Lymph Nodes, Biopsy of Soft Tissue, Biopsy of Bone, Biopsy of Skin ect. - Cytology Specimens: Pleural Fluids, Pericardium Fluids, Peritonial Fluids, FNA Cytology, Sputum, Bronchial Washing, Bronchial Alveolar Lavage Fluid ect ⦠Distribution of Specimens: - Bronchial Specimens: 184 cases (21,52%) - Lung Biopsy with CT-Scan Guiding: 209 cases (24,44%) - Lung Surgery: 116 cases (13,57%) - Pleural Biopsy: 124 cases (14,50%) - Biopsy of Metastatic Lesions: 121 cases (14,15%) - Cytology Specimens: 101 cases (11,82%) § Percentage Mutations by Specimens: - Bronchial Biopsy: 82 cases/184 cases (44, 57%)(P = 0,235) - Lung Biopsy with CT-Scan Guiding: 88 cases/209 cases (42,11%) (P = 0,176) - Lung Surgery: 49 cases/116 cases (42,24%) (P = 0,201) - Biopsy of Metastatic Lesions: 41 cases/124 cases (33,07%) (P = 0,021 < 0,05) - Pleural Biopsy: 53 cases/121 cases (43,80%) (P = 0,221) - Cytology Specimens: 43 cases/101 cases (42,57%) (P = 0,193).
Conclusions
Percentage mutation of pathological specimen groups (Bronchial Specimens, Lung Biopsy with CT-Scan Guiding, Lung Surgery, Pleural Biopsy & Cytology Specimens): equivalent value (P = 0.176 to 0.235> 0.05). Biopsy of metastatic lesions: the lowest rate (P = 0.021 <0.05). It's take a new research to differ on ratio mutations of primary tumor or metastatic lesions. Using almost all type specimens of lung diseases including cytology products.
