A large proportion of cancer patients - exact figures do not exist for Europe - is being cared for by oncologists working outside of academic institutions. These community oncologists typically treat a wide range of diseases. Since 2008, community oncologists are represented within one of ESMO's core committees - the Educational Committee - by the ESMO Community Oncology Faculty, upgraded to a Working Group in 2010. This group believes that cancer care ought to be of the same quality if delivered in an academic institution or by an ESMO member oncologist practising in a community setting. The group therefore works with ESMO to support practising oncologists in delivering the best available care to their patients. ESMO already implemented several measures, such as OncologyPro and additions to ESMO’s web page, to ensure efficient delivery of relevant information to oncologists anywhere. This first CO Symposium at ESMO 2012 is one further effort responding to community oncologists' needs expressed in a European survey to get practice relevant education at ESMO conferences.
